Desiccant Weight Calculator

Two humidity conditions drive the calculation: exterior storage humidity determines the DRF, while maximum allowable interior humidity determines the desiccant adsorption capacity (B).

Grams = (30.4 x 0.01 x A x R x M x DRF) / B DRF = exterior storage temp + humidity  |  B (g H2O/g) = storage temp + max interior humidity

2. Storage Conditions

Exterior Storage Conditions
The environment outside the package. Determines the DRF and moisture load entering through the bag.
Max Allowable Interior Humidity
The highest RH your product can tolerate inside the package. Determines adsorption capacity B.

Uses same storage temperature as exterior conditions.

How This Calculator Works

Exterior storage temperature and humidity

These conditions determine how much moisture exposure your package will face during storage and transit. Higher heat and humidity levels increase the moisture load entering the package over time.

Maximum allowable interior humidity

This defines the highest relative humidity your product can safely tolerate inside the package. The lower the allowable humidity, the more desiccant may be required to maintain protection.

Water Vapor Transmission Rate (WVTR) of the packaging material

WVTR measures how much moisture can pass through the packaging material over a given period. Barrier materials with lower WVTR values typically require less desiccant for long-term storage.

Interior package surface area

The total internal surface area helps estimate the potential moisture exchange occurring within the package environment. Larger package sizes generally require greater moisture control capacity.

Storage duration

Longer storage periods allow more moisture to permeate through the packaging material over time. Extended storage or overseas shipping often increases desiccant requirements significantly.

Desiccant adsorption performance by type

Different desiccants absorb moisture differently depending on humidity and temperature conditions. Selecting the correct desiccant type helps improve performance, efficiency, and long-term protection.

Need a More Accurate Recommendation?

This tool provides estimated values only. Actual packaging performance may vary depending on several real-world factors, including sealing conditions, transportation exposure, product sensitivity, material permeability, headspace volume, and storage fluctuations. For applications involving sensitive electronics, pharmaceuticals, medical devices, military packaging, food products, or long-term storage, we strongly recommend consulting with a specialist before finalizing packaging specifications.

The calculator provides an estimated desiccant requirement based on the inputs entered by the user. It is designed to give a practical starting point for planning, but actual performance can vary significantly depending on real-world conditions such as sealing quality, transportation exposure, product sensitivity, material permeability, headspace volume, and storage fluctuations. For mission-critical or high-value applications, we recommend treating the result as a baseline and validating it under actual packaging conditions.

Yes, this calculator can be used as an initial planning tool for pharmaceutical and food packaging applications to help estimate moisture protection needs. However, because these industries often involve strict regulatory and quality requirements, the final desiccant selection should be validated with proper testing and expert review. For regulated or sensitive applications, we strongly recommend consulting with a Desiccare specialist to ensure compliance and optimal performance. You can reach out to us for technical support and application guidance.

Silica gel is best suited for moderate humidity environments and offers balanced performance across a wide range of packaging applications. Clay is a cost-effective solution for general-purpose moisture control under standard temperature and humidity conditions. Molecular sieve, on the other hand, provides superior performance in very low humidity environments and is ideal when extremely tight moisture control is required. The right choice depends on your product sensitivity, storage conditions, and required level of protection.

If you are unsure about your package’s Water Vapor Transmission Rate (WVTR), our packaging specialists can assist you in identifying or estimating it based on your material type and structure. In many cases, we can also recommend suitable high-barrier materials to improve moisture protection and overall package performance. Feel free to contact us for support in selecting or validating the right packaging system for your application.
