Silica Gel
Silica gel is the most commonly used desiccant, mainly due to its high adsorption capacity at normal conditions. Silica gel is an amorphous form of synthetically manufactured silicon dioxide. Though it is referred to as a gel, it comes in the form of hard, translucent granules. What makes this desiccant so versatile is the fact that it absorbs molecules of water (up to 40% of its weight) into its internal pores and leaves no by-products or chemical reaction. It is non-combustible, safe for food and pharmaceutical applications, and does not corrode metal machinery. It also has applications in chromatography. Silica Gel is able to adsorb more moisture than clay and activated alumina at room temperature and above 40% relative humidity.

Indicating Silica Gel
Indicating silica gel desiccant demonstrates the same features as that of regular silica gel, but it will change color when it becomes fully saturated. Indicating silica gel makes it simple to see when the desiccant needs to be replaced. Both our regular silica gel and indicating silica gel can be regenerated with heat at 230-240 degrees Fahrenheit.

Molecular Sieve
Molecular Sieve is a manufactured zeolite that is designed to selectively adsorb molecules. It contains a network of pores that are sized to adsorb only specific molecules. The pore sizes are measured in Angstroms and can be manufactured in a wide range of configurations. The most common pore size is 4A, becuase the molecular diameter of water is less than 4 Angstroms. It boasts a faster adsorption tate than clay or silica gel and can reduce the relative humidity within a package to under 7%. Molecular sieve also adsorbs well at high temperatures much like activated alumina. However, the adsorption capacity of molecular sieve is lower than clay and silica gel and the cost is much higher. If you are in need of a very stable, environmentally-friendly, fast adsorbing desiccant and/or need to achieve a very low-moisture environment then molecular sieve is an ideal choice, especially for food and pharmaceuticals. It also has applications in chromatography.

Montmorillonite Clay
Montmorillonite clay is a naturally occurring adsorbent material that is non-toxic and practical for a wide range of applications. It is ideal for metal components because it will not cause corrosion and does not change size or shape when at capacity. Clay is considered sustainable and doesn't require any chemical processes to produce. It can be regenerated with heat similar to silica gel. Clay has a high vapor transmission rate with an adsorption rate comparable to silica gel. Clay can absorb up to 28% of its weight in moisture and even outperforms silica gel when used in very low-humidity applications to remove even the slightest bit of moisture from your packaging. Clay is a more cost-effective option than silica gel beads, while delivering impressive moisture absorption.

Carbon
Carbon is derived from charcoal, and offers superior odor & gas absorption capabilities in a sustainable natural material. Carbon works by adsorbing organic molecules to keep your product & packaging smelling fresh. It is very stable even at extreme temperatures and has a long history of use in many odor and gas controlling applications.

Calcium Sulfate
Commercially known as Drierite™, this desiccant is produced from naturally occurring gypsum. It is available in a range of mesh sizes and is even suitable for large scale applications. It has a neutral pH and is chemically inert except to water. It can be regenerated and reused in the same manner as silica gel. It is considered GRAS and is non-toxic. It is non-combustible and non-corrosive, making it a great option for protecting metal parts and machinery.

Calcium Oxide
Calcium oxide, also known as quicklime, is a caustic alkaline desiccant. It is similar to molecular sieve in that it can achieve a low relative humidity. However, it works at a much slower rate than molecular sieve. This means it is able to remove even the slightest bit of moisture from inside a package. It is also highly effective in rubber compounding. Historically it has been used in Navy ships, and it is a main component in cement. One common application for Calcium Oxide is vacuum insulated panels for high-end refrigerators. It is even used in food production as an alkalizing agent. It has an adsorptive capacity of at least 28.5% by weight. It will swell when it adsorbs water, and can be slower-acting than other desiccants, so special packaging considerations are required. Calcium oxide when in contact with liquid water is very exothermic, meaning it gives off a lot of heat. Therefore, special caution must be taken when disposing of this product.

Calcium Chloride
Calcium Chloride is a naturally-derived desiccant that is unique in its classification as a deliquescent. This means that as calcium chloride absorbs moisture it changes from a solid to a liquid salt. Mixing with water causes an exothermic reaction, which makes it very effective as an ice melt for sidewalks and roads. It has the highest absorption capacity with a slow adsorption capacity. It must be stored in a tightly-sealed container due to its highly hygroscopic nature. One advantage of calcium chloride is that it is considered non-toxic, and is even utilized as a food additive firming agent, for canning, pickling, and wine making and beer brewing. It is also used as a pH buffer in swimming pools. Care must be taken with disposal due to the possibility of exothermic reactions with water.

Activated Alumina
Alumina desiccant is special because it has a high adsorption capacity for water at elevated temperatures. Above 120 degrees Fahrenheit the adsorption capacity of silica gel decreases significantly while alumina remains high. Alumina is mainly used in “dynamic” or flow applications. The oil and gas industry is a large consumer of activated alumina.
